What happy students have to say

Elementary Math (K-6)

Young people can grasp advanced concepts early on. Each student is special and unique and deserves a tailored approach. My students, including those who did not start out believing they were “good at Math,” have excelled in the following ways:

  • Finishing 7th grade Pre-Algebra as young as 8.
  • Completing Honors Precalculus as young as 11.
  • Earning A+100% in Geometry at Stanford’s highly rigorous Online High School.
  • Taking Calculus 5 at age 14 at junior college while concurrently enrolled in high school.

I try to engage with humor and inspire with freehand illustrations. Math can be fun! There are many secrets to be found in knowing numbers.

Algebra I & II

For many, Algebra I & II is where the struggles begin. But it need not be scary and difficult. Oftentimes the issue is with earlier concepts that were not mastered with confidence. I will help by explaining concepts in plain English. And I help students to learn to see concepts and problems in a way that makes sense to them.

  • Focused and helpful

"Tim is clearly a very thorough tutor. In advance of meeting with my daughter, he reviewed her Precalculus assignments electronically so that he could optimize his time with her. He was also very patient with my daughter, making sure she understood not only how to complete problems, but the fundamentals of why problems were structured in the way that they were. In her school setting, she has tended to receive instruction that is more focused on rote computation, rather than on the elegance of the math concepts underlying it. She commented that the different conceptual approach with Tim, which he followed with review of computational methods, actually helped her understanding of the computational process better than when just learning computation in a more mechanical way. He is also providing notes she can refer back to from her lesson with him, of definite benefit as she applies what she has newly learned. She immediately asked me to schedule an additional session, and we both are very pleased : )"

AP Calculus & University

Everyone can learn Calculus. It's a great tool and a big confidence booster when you can master this subject. The concepts behind Calculus are actually simple and few in number. But they are often introduced in ways that seem complex and confusing. I will help explain the concepts and terms in simple English and with everyday examples.

  • Absolutely priceless

Not only was he beyond accommodating when Jenna had a last minute event pop up for one of her sessions, he is kind, patient and has an amazing ability to distill complex concepts into something infinitely more easily understandable. I am a visual learner and sometimes I need to see the big picture to understand things, especially mathematics. Tim color coded (which I absolutely LOVE) everything in such a way that it made the concepts easier for me to understand and to recognize the important takeaways from what I am learning. This may not be true for everyone, but I also enjoyed that he took his notes by hand. That’s the way I take my notes so seeing someone work with me that way was comforting. AP Statistics & University

Statistics is like the "algebra" for data analysis, very important in the Big Data era. Statistics is not as much a math-heavy subject as it is a problem-solving discipline. It is too often taught in an abstract way, utilizing underlying principles which are brushed over, therefore leaving the student without a firm foundation to reason with. The process then seems hand-wavy and confusing. With our students, we focus on establishing those underlying principles, visualizing what is going on, and forming the basis on which statistics is built. When that is done, statistics turns out not to be a very complicated subject after all. We have tutored several students taking a university-level statistics class, having no prior background, and succeeding with A/A+'s.

  • Highlights

All students we have tutored in Statistics have received final grades of A's.

Multi-Variable Calculus

Multi-Variable Calculus is the field of mathematics underpinning computer vision, deep learning, and many other applications in the technology sector, and with our tutors' knowledge in these fields, we are able to give students a perspective to understand this subject. As the name suggests, it takes calculus and extends it to multiple variables (e.g. dealing with surfaces rather than curves). It is a natural sequel to Single-Variable Calculus, and we tutor both students taking this course at university as well as high-school students who desire more advanced mathematics.

  • Highlights

Optimization over large state spaces (multiple variables) is very prevalent in computer vision as well as in deep learning. Our practical experience is in these areas, and we help students understand the theoretical work behind these, which is taught in university coursework.

Linear Algebra

Linear algebra provides a nice link between mathematics and computation and it is heavily used in the fields of deep learning, robotics, data analysis, finance, and many others. This is typically a university-level course, but we are also happy to tutor motivated high-school students. If chosen as an extracurricular, we bring in examples of the applications listed above and tutor linear algebra from those contexts.

  • Highlights

Our tutors have years of experience working with Linear Algebra, especially in research.

AP Chemistry & University

On the one hand, teaching chemistry is an exercise in organization, and the order and way of presenting the material is key to the success of understanding it. On the other hand, practical, fast success in this subject is about pattern-matching and memorizing. Our tutoring in this subject is always focused on the goal (e.g. test) at hand, and we target practical tips in order to quickly solve chemistry problems. In addition, we provide our students intuition, background, and depth of understanding so that the material that is often taught in a "patched" manner has some continuity.

  • Highlights

Our tutors are experienced with accelerated, material-packed classes and helping our students succeed under pressure.

AP Physics & University

We tutor Physics from first principles - from the beginning of systems - and then understanding each component. This is crucial in order to succeed at physics. Unlike computer science where one works with components without necessarily needing to understand all the inner-workings, or mathematics where one can somewhat pattern-match in order to solve problems, physics is all about understanding the whole system and the interactions of each component. This requires a different mindset to problem-solving, and this is our approach in tutoring.

  • Highlights

Our tutors' backgrounds are in Engineering with Physics as the underpinning.

AP Music Theory & University

Some of the most challenging components of this test include the 4-part harmony writing, the melodic/harmonic dictation, and the sight singing. We approach the 4-part harmony writing from somewhat a mathematical perspective, where we first ensure that students understand all of the rules and then guide them to recognize patterns (e.g. common progressions, cadences, etc.). There are a few directions to take for mastering melodic/harmonic dictation and sight singing, essentially taking a "relative", interval-based approach or an "absolute", perfect-pitch approach. We find the right direction for students and help them to master it.

  • Highlights

Our tutors have both extensive experience in music performance and university-level harmony, and understand how to achieve perfect 5s in all sections of the AP Music Theory test.

Music Composition

While music composition is an art, good music follows rules of melody and harmony. In fact, it is a very nice bridge between both mathematical and artistic contexts. We tutor students to take ideas and channel them into full-fledged musical pieces. This requires understanding music theory, structure, and flow. We show how to take ideas and develop them (extend, fragment, or transform). Additionally, it requires an understanding of instruments and how to write for their iconic nature (known as orchestration). Rhythm, accompaniment, and instrument interplay are other features which go into taking a piece to the next level. We tutor both students who have had prior musical background as well as those just starting.

  • Highlights

Our experience in this field covers compositions for String Quartets, Orchestras, Small Bands, and others as well as classical training and university study in harmony.

World History & U.S. History

Learning history is difficult when it amounts to trying to blindly remember dates mapped to events. Our approach to teaching history is to discover a landscape which connects people with geography across time. This allows events in history to have context and meaning. It allows students to see from a bird's-eye view. It provides background and continuity so that studying people and events of the past becomes almost 3-dimensional and real.

  • Highlights

Our students have been successful with our method and discovered that they really enjoy the subject of history.

English (Grammar & Mechanics)

At the heart of English Grammar and Mechanics is a practice of organization. Diagramming is an essential element of learning the parts of speech, and along with being a visual aid, diagramming serves as the organizing tool for grammar and mechanics. Our lessons focus on helping students form both grammatically correct sentences and linguistically strong sentences. Included in the lessons is a focus on the Greek and Latin Roots of English — helping students discover vocabulary through knowledge of roots, prefixes, and suffixes.

  • Highlights

Our tutors have extensive experience in teaching English Grammar and Mechanics to students of all ages, including those who do not have English as their first language. We personalize the teaching of grammar and mechanics to the level and background of the student. We also prepare our students for the SAT Writing and Language Test, SAT Essay, ACT English Test, and ACT Writing Test.

Creative Writing

Character development, character connections, and environment development come from experience in analyzing behavior. A good writer has the ability to study human nature intensely and then capture these interactions with sophisticated and expressive language. Moreover, the ability to write well comes with both discipline and practice. Each of these sides is addressed with exercises designed to guide students in the footsteps of iconic writers -- helping students develop their own writing voices while recognizing the patterns and techniques of highly successful writers. The editing of creative writing is essential, and along with the teaching and guidance that is provided, professional editing is offered as well.

  • Highlights

Our specialized tutor in this area is a published writer who knows well all stages of the writing process, from development to editing and submitting for publication. Whether a student's creativity is expressed in story-telling, non-fiction literature, or topic research, we guide and propel students to reach their goals.

Reading Comprehension

Reading comprehension is the ability to absorb and reiterate information. This information can come in the form of stories, opinion, scientific presentations, charts/graphs, or non-fiction essays. Especially on standardized tests, the approach one must take toward reading comprehension questions depends on the type of passage that is being presented (literature, non-fiction, scientific, debate, etc.). For each category, we provide our students with strategies and techniques for approaching both the passage and questions.

  • Highlights

Our tutors have extensive experience teaching the discipline of reading comprehension. For our younger students preparing for grade-level assessments, we teach them how to be insightful and faster readers. For our high-school students, we prepare them for the SAT Reading Test and the ACT Reading Test.

Art

In the world of drawing, anything is possible! We teach our students from the smallest of eager artists to those more experienced how to draw everything their hearts desire, step-by-step. Complex and professional-looking drawings can easily be broken down into simple shapes that anyone can make, which then become more detailed, and are darkened with marker or pen to produce a clean finished product. All you need for an art class with Touchdown Tutors is some paper, a pencil, an eraser, a pen or marker, and a little bit of imagination!

  • Highlights

Our tutors have worked professionally in graphic design, logo design, and drawing. Our students can propose an art style they love (like The Diary of a Wimpy Kid) and our tutors will equip them with the skills they need to create their own drawings in that same style.
